Carbon, Energy, and Air Quality

 

The ESF Office of Sustainability has partnered with the Sustainable and Resilient Built Environment Lab (SARBEL) to deploy a network of more than 32 air quality monitoring devices across academic, administrative and common spaces on campus. Each device tracks total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, relative humidity and sound level. A dedicated weather station adds a range of outdoor parameters that provide context for the indoor readings.

Over the past year, the initiative has analyzed continuous data from these devices alongside feedback on occupant experience in the monitored spaces. Together, this shows how ventilation, occupancy patterns and building operations shape air quality in classrooms, offices, corridors and common areas across campus. A summary of these findings is available in the report below. Detailed underlying data can be made available upon reasonable request through the Facilities Office or the SARBEL Lab.

Campus Air Quality Monitoring is one part of ESF's broader work to make campus buildings healthier and more responsive to the people who use them, connecting sustainability, occupant wellbeing and facilities operations under a single, data-driven program.

What's Being Monitored

Indoor Sensor Network

More than 32 devices installed in classrooms, offices, corridors and common spaces, tracking CO2, PM2.5, PM10, TVOCs, temperature, humidity and sound level.

One Year of Data

A full year of continuous monitoring data has been analyzed alongside reported occupant experience in the spaces studied.

 

Campus Weather Station

A dedicated outdoor weather station monitors a range of ambient air quality and climate parameters, providing context for indoor conditions.

Data Access

Live readings are available through the SARBEL data portal. Detailed historical data can be requested from the Facilities Office or the SARBEL Lab.
