Cross-country Teams Run Well in Cazenovia
The Mighty Oaks men's and women's cross-country teams competed in the Cazenovia College Invitational Saturday, Oct. 1, with the women finishing second and the men placing third. ESF freshman Brian Busby was the overall winner, setting a new course record of 28 minutes and 4 seconds.
Busby used a last-minute kick to outpace Colgate University senior Mitch Boucher to reach the finish line first.
Overall, the Mighty Oaks men ran their best race of the season despite the cold and rainy weather and placed third out of 11 teams on a tough, muddy course. Hartwick College was the overall winner of the race with 46 points, followed by Colgate, which narrowly beat the Mighty Oaks score of 68 with a 66-point effort.
Busby was followed by Timmy Callahan, freshman, 12th; Ethan Washburn, freshman, 14th; Matt DeLuca, sophomore, 20th; Jacob Wolfgong, freshman, 21st; Collin Bartholomew, junior, 26th; Andrew Gritzmacher, freshman, 27th; Matt Glaub, freshman, 31st; James McKenna, sophomore, 38th; Nick Greico, freshman, 41st; Max Woelk, freshman, 43rd; Mike Miles, senior, 48th; Nathan Sleight, junior, 49th; Joe Gerchman, junior, 60th; Owen Hunter, senior, 62nd, Matt Allen, senior, 64th; Cody Wilkes, freshman, 66th; Sean Kernan, senior, 72nd; Dan Hohl, senior, 75th; and Dylan Foti, freshman, 80th.
The Mighty Oaks women's cross-country team finished second of 11 teams at the Cazenovia meet.
Ithaca College snuck by ESF by only 6 points, but the Mighty Oaks beat Paul Smith's College, Wells College, Cazenovia College, Pennsylvannia State Wilkes Barre-Scranton, Hartwick College, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Morrisville, SUNY-IT and Bryant and Stratton College. ESF's impressive finish was an upset for Paul Smith's, which was defeated by 50 points, and Pennsylvannia State Wilkes Barre-Scranton, which tied ESF for second place in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship last fall.
Freshman Cambria Ziemer was ESF's top runner and placed second overall on the wet and muddy five-kilometer course with a time of 22:04.7. Following Ziemer for the Mighty Oaks were Erica Grohol, freshman, fourth; Mikayla Bittner, freshman, 16th; Elizabeth Bourguet, freshman, 19th; Danielle Zgardzinski, sophomore, 25th; Emily Martin, junior, 28th; Bridget Bromm, junior, 35th; Aileen Gray, freshman, 38th; Charlotte Evanofski, senior, 41st; Kaitlin Larson, senior, 48th; Alice Gallagher, junior, 50th; and Kelly McKenna, freshman, 52nd.
The Mighty Oaks men and women compete next at Hamilton College at the Hamilton invitational Saturday, Oct. 8.
