Men Win Cross-Country Opener; Women Finish Second

The Mighty Oaks men's and women's cross-country teams started their season at the SUNY-IT Wildcat Classic Sept. 1 with a win for the men and a second-place finish for the women.

ESF Coach John View said the Mighty Oaks runners did an outstanding job among the field of 16 teams.

On a warm day in Utica, the men, the defending USCAA national champions, finished first in the 16-team field, with seven Mighty Oaks runners in the top 20. Sophomore Brian Busby was the first ESF runner to the finish line, and placed third overall. Other top finishers for the men were sophomore Timmy Callahan, fourth overall, freshman Stephen Slonosky (ninth), freshman Peter LeDuc (tenth), junior Taylor Yerrick - Jr. (12th), freshman Jeremy Driscoll (14th) and junior Matt Deluca (18th).

Finishing in the top 40 for ESF were junior Jon Cleveland (21st), junior James McKenna (24th), freshman Caleb Rudge (27th), sophomore Andrew Gritzmacher (28th), sophomore Jacob Wolfgong (30th), sophomore Ethan Washburn (33rd), sophomore Nick Grieco (34th) and sophomore Malcolm Moncheur (35th). Also competing for ESF were sophomore Matt Glaub (41st), freshman Kai Crannell (43rd), freshman Ben Butryn (51st), senior Collin Bartholomew (57th), freshman Taylor Dellarocco (70th), junior Nathan Sleight (79th) and senior Matt Allen (127th).

The men's race featured 147 runners.

The Mighty Oaks women, who finished second in last year's national championship, were second behind William Smith College.

Sophomore Cambria Ziemer led the first ESF women, finishing seventh overall, and was one of six top-20 runners for the Mighty Oaks. Other Mighty Oaks women among the top 20 were junior Emily Martin (11th), sophomore Jenny Frank (12th), junior Danielle Zgardinski (13th), senior Danielle Kaveney (14th) and sophomore Kristen Campbell (19th).

Finishing in the top 40 were freshman Cara Keogh (28th), freshman Casey Cole (29th) and sophomore Liz Bourgeut (36th). Also competing for ESF were freshman Radka Yang (44th), junior Bridget Bromm (50th), sophomore Mikayla Bittner (53rd), freshman Amber Antonison (55th) junior Lauren Alteio (68th), freshman Ashley Davis (74th), senior Kristin Pasquino (80th), sophomore Aileen Gray (93rd) and freshman Jeanne Mastrandrea (104th).

There were 128 runners in the women's race.

The next race for the Mighty Oaks is Saturday, Sept. 8 at SUNY Oswego Invitational. The men will race at 11 a.m.; the women at noon.
