ESF Celebrates Earth Week
While the rest of the world reserves 24 hours to celebrate Earth Day, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) takes a whole week to honor the earth.
This year's Earth Week festivities will feature an on-campus discussion with Sanjit "Bunker" Roy, the founder of the Barefoot College in India during the college's Moonlighting discourse series. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. April 22 at ESF's Gateway Center.
Joining Roy will be Meagan Fallone, CEO of Barefoot College International; and Dr. Samuel Gorovitz, a professor of philosophy at Syracuse University and a leader in the development of medical ethics; and ESF President Quentin Wheeler. Those attending are asked to register. Attendance is free of charge.
Prior to Moonlighting, ESF will host the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps (OLCC) photo exhibit, "Onondaga Lake: An Important Stop for Birds on an Impressive Journey" from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Gateway Center. This exhibit represents OLCC's partnership with Audubon New York and Honeywell. The exhibit showcases stunning images of migratory birds and waterfowl along the Onondaga Lake shoreline.
Other Earth Week events included the Spotlight Symposium on Research and Outreach, a poster session featuring the work of graduate and undergraduate students, noon to 2 p.m., April 19 in the Gateway Center.
An opening reception and art exhibit featuring the work of Adirondack Interpretive Center summer artists in residence Casey Landerkin and Mariana Trofimova was held in 110 Moon Library April 19 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Children of ESF employees will visit campus as part of Take our Kids to Work Day April 21. The young scientists will participate in numerous hands-on activities in laboratories and classrooms across campus.
ESF students will participate in the Spring Campus Day of Service April 23. They will volunteer at locations throughout Onondaga County, including the Brady Faith Sustainable Farm Community, Pioneer Homes Community Garden, Comfort Tyler Park and Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery.
EarthFest will round out the week's events. EarthFest is a free, community-wide, sustainability-themed music and art festival celebrating Earth Day. The event, from noon to 6 p.m. in Thornden Park Amphitheater, will feature art installations, local food and craft vendors, and community and student organizations along with live bands.
