Weekend Sports Recap for Feb. 6, 7
The men's basketball team traveled to New York City and split two vital conference games while the Mighty Oaks indoor track team continued its success at Utica College.
In the first game of the road trip, the men's basketball team faced HVIAC foe King's College in a game held at Baruch College in Manhattan. The Mighty Oaks came away with an 87-67 win. Junior Ryan Caldwell had another monster game for the Mighty Oaks finishing with 20 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore center Tyler Kuhn scored a career high 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Jared Bard chipped in 16 points along with four three-pointers. The following day, the Mighty Oaks traveled to Queens, New York where it faced USCAA #14-ranked Vaughn College in another HVIAC matchup. Despite a strong effort by ESF, the Mighty Oaks fell 86-80 in a back-and-forth affair. The Mighty Oaks were able to handle Vaughn's patent half court zone most of the first half to come away with a three-point lead at half time. In the second half, the Mighty Oaks led by as many as 11. The Warriors adjusted by switching to a man-to-man defense. A couple key three-pointers by Vaughn brought the Warriors back into the game. The Mighty Oaks had two chances to tie the game in the last 35 seconds, but were unable to convert. Caldwell continued his strong play finishing with 22 points. Junior Dan Treadwell contributed 20 points in the loss. The men's basketball team falls to 5-13 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The team faces nationally-ranked Berkley College on Senior Day, Feb. 13 at Institute of Technology.
On the track, the Mighty Oaks men's and women's track team continued its success at the Utica College Doris & Walt Miga Invitational. For the men's squad, senior Nick Giordano finished first in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:08. Giordano's time was not only an ESF school record, but also a course record at Utica College. Senior Thomas Arcuri finished 10th out of 35 runners on the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.38. Fellow senior Dan McGraw finished in 13th place in the 800-meter event as well with a time of 2:04.98. Freshman Sean Satchwell notched a sub-five minute mile and a 14th place finish in the one-mile race out of 34 runners with a time of 4:46. In the relay events, the team consisting of junior Michael Persson, Giordano, McGraw and Arcuri finished in first place in the distance medley with a time of 11:09. Giordano also competed in the 4x400-meter relay with teammates junior Ryan Mackerer, sophomore James Longo and freshman Sean Satchwell. The team managed a fourth place finish with a time of 3:36 out of nine teams.
For the women, freshman Marissa Lathrop picked up third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28. Senior Andrea Szewczyk, sophomore Emily Verbeck and freshman Hailey Smalley finished in ninth, 10th and 11th place overall in the 800-meter race. Freshman Sarah Wohlfahrt had a strong seventh place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.67. Freshman Ji Ann Greenberg continued her consistent performance in the triple jump event finishing in eighth place out of 12 competitors with a distance of 9.51 meters.
The indoor track team will have a weekend off and are back in action Feb. 20 at the Brockport Classic.
