Mighty Oaks Weekly Sports Recap — Oct. 9
The Mighty Oaks men's and women's soccer teams both defeated cross-town rivals OCC, 3-0 in each game, in the annual King and Queen of the Hill Cup.
Senior Shannon Gordinier had a goal and an assist in the women's 3-0 win over the Lazers. Seniors Megan Herbst and Lauren Archer also scored for ESF. The senior class has won every game against the Lazers in their four years as Mighty Oaks.
On the men's side, the Mighty Oaks have not had as much success. The ESF team had not won against OCC since 2012. Two first-half goals by sophomore Luke Day and another goal in the first half by sophomore Mickael Myagkota was all ESF needed to defeat a talented OCC squad that came into the game with a 10-2 record.
The men's team kept the winning momentum going into the weekend, defeating Alfred State 4-0 and then knocking off Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Vaughn College, 4-0, the following day. Sophomore forward Joe Kulikowski had a huge weekend, scoring six goals altogether — a hat trick in each game.
Graduate student Tyler Felice-Jennings chipped in two assists versus Vaughn College. Freshman goalkeeper Carmine Tronolone started all three games during the week and recorded a shutout in each game, including eight saves versus OCC.
The men's soccer team improves to 8-3 overall, 5-0 in conference play. The team faces the undefeated Bryant and Stratton Bobcats Oct. 12.
The women's team had a 3-0 loss to Alfred State over the weekend and fall to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play. The team plays next Oct. 12 versus the Bryant and Stratton Bobcats.
"It was a great weekend of soccer. Everyone's hitting their mid-season form, the style of play is clicking and everyone can feel the momentum rolling as we head into the second half of the season," said men's soccer senior Matt Murray.
On the cross-country course, both the men's and women's teams finished in third place at the Hamilton College Invitational.
The freshmen continue to lead both squads. Erin Cocca finished first for the Mighty Oaks, ninth overall, with a time of 19:52 in the 5k race. Cocca's time was also the third fastest 5k in school history. Senior Laura Wengert also scored for ESF, finishing 14th overall with a time of 20:13. The host Hamilton College Continentals finished first overall in the women's race.
The freshman trio of Mark McClenahan (11th - 27:03), Tom Keenan (15th - 27:33) and Anders Proft (16th - 27:34) led the men's team. The three freshmen finished in the top 20 out of 120 runners. The Hamilton College men's team was the overall winner.
Both teams run Oct. 14 at the University of Rochester Invitational.
