Assistant Professor Anne Godfrey and SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Richard Hawks will be honored by the New York Upstate Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in March.

Hawks will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes individual practitioners for their contributions to the profession over their career.

A graduate of ESF and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Hawks joined the ESF faculty in 1979 following staff assignments as research assistant and research associate at Harvard. He was department chair from 1988 to 2013.

Hawks has numerous professional publications to his credit and is a popular invited lecturer on aspects of design and design education. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), a member of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), and Sigma Lambda Alpha, the landscape architecture honorary society.

Godfrey will be receiving The Distinguished Practitioner Award – Academic Practice. The award recognizes an outstanding individual practitioner for achievements in three areas: design, leadership and ASLA chapter involvement.

Godfrey emphasizes cross-disciplinary investigation through critical practices in photography. Her research centers on how photography influences the ways in which we understand, value and design for landscape places. Her work bridges the gap between landscape architecture and theory in art, photography and visual studies.

In addition, her teaching engages speculative design for climate change resilience. Since 2011, students in her upper-division design studios have won or been finalists in top professional international competitions.

ESF alumnus Peter Osborne (LA, '82), partner at Appel Osborne Landscape Architecture, is also being honored with the Distinguished Practitioner Award – Private Practice. Students from ESF and Cornell University will participate in a poster session during the reception. Attendees will be asked to rank the projects during the reception and the highest-ranking project will receive an award.

The awards event will be held March 15 at the Corning Glass Museum.
