Mighty Oaks Weekend Recap (Sept. 2)

The defending USCAA cross country national champions started the season with a first place overall finish at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invite held Aug. 31.

Abby Perez, a freshman from Queens, New York, made a huge first impression, finishing second overall in her first-ever collegiate race. Perez finished the 4K race with a time of 17:16. Junior Julie Romano finished third overall with a time of 17:34, while senior Erin Cocca rounded out the top five with a fifth place finish and a time of 17:59. Also scoring for ESF was sophomore Cassidy Engleson (10th – 18:19) and junior Tabby Wechter (11th – 18:23).

Riley Poisson from William Smith College finished first overall. The invitational featured 10 Division III schools.

For the men's race, ESF finished second overall.

Freshman Matthew Tripp led ESF with a second place finish overall with a time of 19:37 in the 6K race. Tripp, a local product from Fayetteville-Manlius High School, was one of the top high school runners in New York state last year.

Junior Mark McClenahan finished 13th overall with a time 20:47 while another freshman, Simon Seidl, placed 17th overall with a time of 21:08.

Both teams are back in action Sept. 21 at the Roberts Wesleyan Invite.

The women's soccer team started the 2019 season off with two straight wins. The Mighty Oaks face University of Pittsburgh - Bradford and came away with a 3-0 win. ESF followed up the win with a 6-0 shutout win over Finger Lakes Community College. Senior Alyssa Hughes scored two goals for ESF while senior Marissa Pompeii had a goal and an assist.

"We kept our composure and worked in unison as we maneuvered the ball around the field to get six goals in the back of the net." said freshman Claire Maring.

The men's soccer team started its season off with a 5-0 win over Finger Lakes Community College. ESF started off slow going scoreless in the first half. In the second half, the Mighty Oaks exploded for five goals. Sophomore Jack Phillips had one goal and one assist.

"We came together in the second half and worked with one another to get the result we came for." said freshman Caleb Prenoveau.

Both teams are back in action Sept. 4 at the annual King and Queen of the Hill Cup against Onondaga Community College.
