It's Time to Get Dirty

Kristin Kimball, New York Times best-selling author of The Dirty Life will be on campus to discuss farming and the new agriculture movement April 25 beginning at 4 p.m. Joining Kristin will be her husband Mark, a farmer and co-owner with Kristin of Essex Farm located in Essex, New York.

The Kimballs will share what they have learned, where the farm is heading, how they envision Essex Farm and their efforts contributing to positive change in regional food systems, and informing evolving models for the future farms and food production.

A farm-to-table reception and a panel discussion with ESF alumni currently working in New Agriculture will follow the Kimballs' presentation.

The farm-to-table reception catered by Scratch Farmhouse Catering begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a wide range of locally sourced and produced foods, and will include comments from Scratch Farmhouse Catering owner and Chef Luke Szabo. In addition, Dirty Life Project partner clubs and student organizations will be tabling throughout the reception area. Attendees are encouraged to visit with them to learn more about being engaged on campus. The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency will also be present to share information about its composting program.

The panel discussion with four ESF graduates working in agriculture careers begins at 7 p.m. Each alum has a unique pathway to their current position, and each is working in a different facet of farming and the New Agriculture movement. The panel will field questions from the audience and engage in a discussion of their academic and professional preparation, as well the challenges, opportunities and rewards of their profession.
