ESF Orientation Leaders (OLS) - Fall 2022
Mighty Oak Monday: Student Orientation Leaders
Our ESF Orientation Leaders are excited to welcome new students to campus! Orientation Leaders (OLs) are students that volunteer to help with move-in and orientation. They come from all class levels and all majors on campus. Orientation leaders are new student's source of information for their first week on campus. So, if you have questions, ask someone in the red, orange and yellow tie-dye shirt.
In the weeks leading up to orientation, we asked this year's orientation leaders about their top piece of advice for new students and why they loved ESF. Here's what some of them said:
What is your advice for new students?
"Introduce yourself to everyone you meet. Almost everyone here is friendly and willing to say hi." – Sam Hopson
"Don't be afraid to ask questions! I had lots of questions when I first arrived at ESF and people are willing to help you find answers." – Allison Kopinski
"Attend campus events to socialize and BRING CONTAINERS EVERY SINGLE TIME to take home free food!!!! Mighty Oak Student Association and diversity clubs such as Black Student Union, Baobab Society, Desi Club, and many others hold events that are often coordinated with DELICIOUS food!!!!" – Yelena Bolante
"It's okay if your friends freshman year are not your friends forever. Not everyone you meet initially, is going to be someone you want to hang out with for the rest of your collegiate career or the rest of your life. You will meet so many cool (and not so cool) people that it is inevitable that you will find your people." – Shelby Martin
"Try not to procrastinate and form study groups since it is a great way to make friends and will help with an intensive course load." – Olivia Abry
"Say yes! Join a club? Yes. Go on a trip? Yes. Go to office hours? YES. There's so many opportunities at ESF- don't let them pass you by." – Alexa Carlson
"The best advice I can give is to stay organized, things get very busy and it's easy to get stressed out and lost. Also to branch out and talk to people you never thought you would. I've made my best friends out of people I least expected." – Maya Castro
Why do you love ESF?
"All the students are here for the same reason, to help the environment, and it shows. The vibes here are chill and inviting and I feel at home here!" – Leilani Hooks
"ESF is the perfect school for learning everything you need to know before you need to go into your field. It is super hands on and everyone is willing to learn or teach here, depending on why you need." - Jenelle Grigelevich
"Many schools preach community, but ESF genuinely delivers in ways I could never imagine. There is such a grand sense of togetherness among the students here, and you can always find someone who shares your obscure obsessions." – Fritz Hopf
"As a specialized school ESF offers so many unique opportunities that are bound to catch your attention. You get a small school feel while also having the ability to cross over to Syracuse's campus and get involved there as well." – Grace Burrows
"I love the inclusive community of like-minded people and the focus on environmental issues and sustainability that other schools do not share." – Henry DeVasher
"The small community of like-minded people creates a welcoming environment with the potential of making strong social and professional connections with everyone you meet. Additionally, with SU right next to us, we get to have the social experience of a big school while also having the tight community feeling of a small school. " – Eduardo Machado
