Dr. Chang Geun Yoo Named Rising Star

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Nov. 4, 2024 – Dr. Chang Geun Yoo of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) has been named an Energy and Fuels Rising Star for making significant contributions to discovering new knowledge or advancing technological development in his field of energy research.

"Dr. Yoo's recognition as an Energy and Fuels Rising Star is a testament to his forward-thinking research in sustainable chemical engineering and dedication to creating innovative solutions for a cleaner future,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. “His contributions to the field not only reflect the core values of ESF but also inspire our students. We are incredibly proud of Chang’s achievements and the impact he continues to make in advancing renewable energy technologies."

Energy & Fuels, a journal published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), covers research on the science and application of energy and fuels. The annual Rising Stars honor was established to recognize early- and mid-career researchers and who must be 12 years or less within the award of Ph.D. degree and in an independent research career.

Yoo is an associate professor in ESF’s Department of Chemical Engineering. His Biorefinery Engineering Laboratory focuses on developing biomass utilization strategies for sustainable, renewable, and eco-friendly products including fuels, chemicals, and materials. His research contributions to the field of sustainable chemical engineering are extraordinary. He has contributed to more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and nine book chapters.

His work has appeared in several of the best journals in his field including ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, ACS Catalysis, ACS Energy Letters, Green Chemistry, ChemSusChem, and Chemical Engineering Journal.

His research achievements have been acknowledged with several research awards: the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory UT-Battelle Award & Supplementary Performance Award (ORNL), and the Research Excellence Award (Iowa State University). His recent papers were awarded the 2020 Best Paper Award (Applied Sciences) and Article Award 2020 (Bioresource Technology). He has served as an associate editor in Frontiers in Chemical Engineering journal and as a guest editor in several special issues in Frontiers in Energy Research, Energies, Applied Sciences, and Frontiers in Chemical Engineering.

Yoo is a leading researcher in the sustainable biorefinery research field. His lignin-derived deep eutectic solvents are promising in future eco-manufacturing applications by replacing petroleum-based solvents and valorizing an underutilized biomass component (i.e., lignin) in the current biorefinery industry.

About SUNY ESF

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies, and building a sustainable and resilient future through design, policy, and management of the environment and natural resources. Members of the College community share a passion for protecting the health of the planet and a deep commitment to the rigorous application of science to improve the way humans interact with the world. The College offers academic programs ranging from the associate of applied science to the Doctor of Philosophy. ESF students live, study and do research on the main campus in Syracuse, N.Y., and on 25,000 acres of field stations in a variety of ecosystems across the state.
