ESF Students Connect with Employers, Graduate Schools At “Destinations and Degrees”
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Sept. 26, 2025 — The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) launched a new, expanded career event to help students take the next step toward their professional futures.
For the first time, ESF Career Services combined its two largest fall programs into one major event: Destinations & Degrees: ESF's Fall 2025 Career, Internship, and Graduate School Fair, held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, at the JMA Wireless Dome.
“Destinations and Degrees is more than an event—it’s a gateway to opportunity,” said John Turbeville, director of Career Services. “Students have the opportunity to form meaningful connections that could shape their careers. Whether seeking an internship, a first job, or simply exploring options, this fair highlights the incredible demand for ESF graduates in environmental fields.”
James Moran, a junior majoring in environmental science, attended the event seeking an internship in watershed science or renewable energy. “I know I need to start looking early, and that Career Services offers a lot of good events like this.”
The fair featured representatives from a wide range of organizations offering environmentally focused careers, as well as admissions professionals from graduate and law schools across the country. More than 100 employer organizations — including corporate, government, and nonprofit agencies — were present to recruit for permanent positions, internships, and seasonal employment opportunities.
For many employers, ESF’s career fair is a must-attend event.
“We’re looking for environmentally conscious people,” said Ian Mosebach, an arborist with Arcadis, a global design, engineering, and consultancy firm based in Amsterdam. “So we come every year.” Mosebach, based in the company’s New York City office, said many Arcadis employees are ESF grads: “It’s our number one alumni school in the New York City office.”
One of those alumni is Emily Enders, who graduated in May with a degree in environmental resources engineering. She returned to ESF and the career fair as one of Arcadis’ recruiters.
Now, as an environmental engineer involved with stormwater management, Enders said her ESF education prepared her well. “My stormwater management class in particular translated really well in terms of what I’m doing now.”
Ender’s job, soon after graduating, supports the high success rate of students in securing employment after graduation. According to the Class of 2023 Outcomes Survey, 90% of graduates were working or attending graduate school; 86% were in a career related to their major, and 98% found a position within six months of graduation.
“We’re fortunate our students not only receive great preparation when they're here, but that their talents and skills are recognized,” said Turbeville. “Standing among the employers and graduate schools are looking to recruit from our school, they do very well. With our high placement rates it's not hard to recognize that students are coming to ESF with passion and purpose, and they're able to put that into practice quickly.”
In addition to career opportunities, students will be able to explore graduate programs in environmental, legal, and medical fields. “One in four ESF graduates goes on to attend graduate school; this fair is an opportunity for students to explore their post-graduate options,” Turbeville added.
To help students prepare professionally, photographer Charles Wainwright was on site offering free headshots for LinkedIn profiles and personal websites.
