Meet the Faculty - Deepak Kumar

Dr. Deepak Kumar brings innovation and impact to life in the Department of Chemical Engineering at SUNY ESF. With a background in bioprocessing, he saw ESF as the perfect place to merge his passion for teaching and sustainability-focused research. Since joining the college, he’s created courses like Process Simulation Modeling that give students hands-on experience using real-world tools to solve real-world problems. His classes blend engineering fundamentals with a mission — to prepare students to think beyond traditional chemical processes and toward creating greener, more sustainable solutions.

In his research lab, Dr. Kumar leads cutting-edge projects focused on the circular bioeconomy — turning industrial waste into high-value products like biodegradable bioplastics. He collaborates with major institutions like the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the USDA, giving students opportunities to engage in research with global impact. For him, sustainability isn’t just a subject — it’s part of ESF’s DNA. His students share that same drive to innovate, protect the planet, and shape a cleaner, more sustainable future through engineering.
