Meet the Faculty - Kim Schulz

A chance discovery in a scientific journal led Dr. Kim Schulz to SUNY ESF’s Environmental Biology department, where her passion for freshwater science, marine ecology, and hands-on environmental education quickly found a home. Specializing in limnology — the study of lakes and freshwater systems — she takes full advantage of Central New York’s incredible natural resources, creating immersive learning experiences that bring students out into the field and into real ecosystems. From launching one of ESF’s first marine ecology courses to reimagining labs as experiential, field-based learning, her work highlights how studying water systems connects science, exploration, and real-world impact.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Schulz is deeply involved in applied research and outreach, including a statewide boat steward program focused on invasive species prevention and water quality protection. Working alongside students, she helps bridge science and public education — tracking how species spread between waterways and empowering communities to take simple actions that make a big difference. It’s a dynamic look at how ESF students don’t just study ecosystems — they actively protect them, gaining meaningful experience while contributing to environmental solutions.
