NYS Science Congress In Session at SUNY ESF
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — June 7, 2026 — The New York State Science Congress was in session Sunday, June 7, on the campus of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring student researchers from across the state.
Approximately 150 students, all winners of regional science fairs in New York, attended the event, which recognizes high-achieving science students and highlights their original research.
The New York State Science Congress serves as a culminating experience for students who have received top honors at official regional science fairs. Many of these fairs are affiliated with Society for Science and the International Science and Engineering Fair, part of a global network that connects students to national competitions such as the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and the Broadcom MASTERS.
This marks the first year ESF hosted the Science Congress, which is administered by the Science Teachers Association of New York State.
The event featured junior and senior divisions, with students competing individually or in teams of up to three. Participants presented their research through poster presentations evaluated by ESF faculty, staff, graduate students and community members with expertise in scientific disciplines.
ESF President Joanie Mahoney spoke with students during the Congress.
“ESF is proud to host the Science Congress to encourage students to further their interest in science,” said Mahoney. “By bringing students together to present their work and be recognized for their achievements, we’re helping guide them along their academic journeys and supporting their growth as the next generation of scientists and science communicators.”
The Science Congress underscores ESF’s ongoing commitment to supporting student engagement and achievement in science. The event also reflects the College’s broader efforts through its K-12 outreach programs to provide meaningful opportunities for students to develop skills and pursue interests in STEM fields as they prepare for the next stages of their academic careers.
