Dr. Sharon Moran
Associate Professor

Dr. Sharon Moran is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at SUNY ESF and Co-Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence, Society and Environment. Her work centers on the human dimensions of environmental issues, especially water resources. She co-authored the book, Revitalizing Urban Waterway Communities: Streams of Environmental Justice with April Baptiste and Richard Smardon. Moran’s work has appeared in the journals Landscape and Urban Planning, Environment, Environmental Justice, Ethics, Place, and Environment, and others. Her current research examines topics such as: the adoption of innovative technologies including composting toilets; material elements, olfaction, and place interpretation; green burials (composting corpses); and digitally-mediated nature relationships.
Dr. Joshua Cousins
Assistant Professor
Department of Environmental Studies
Dr. Joshua Cousins is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at SUNY-ESF and Co-Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence, Society and Environment. He serves as Associate Editor for Geoforum and chairs the Cultural and Political Ecology Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. His research examines how knowledge, power, and technology mediate human-environment relationships, with particular focus on nature-based solutions, urban sustainability and resilience, metabolic geographies, water and energy resources, and just transitions. Published in journals including Progress in Human Geography, Ecological Economics, Annals of the American Association of Geographers, and Landscape and Urban Planning, among other journals, his scholarship interrogates the co-production of nature, society, and technology in environmental governance systems. His work aims to develop transformative pathways to equitable climate solutions and to better understand the social and ecological impacts of the material flow of goods and resources across their life cycle.
