Certificate Programs
Indigenous Peoples and the Environment

The Indigenous Peoples and the Environment Advanced Certificate explores foundational skills and knowledge in
partnering with Indigenous Nations for environmental research, conservation, and restoration. Upon completion of this Certificate, students will be able to

  1. Analyze the impact of colonial and decolonial forces throughout history at local, national, and global scales with
    respect to land and resources;
  2. Articulate the value of Indigenous knowledge systems;
  3. Describe processes for Indigenous-led conservation;
  4. Describe research between multiple worldviews in alliance with Indigenous Nations; and
  5. Evaluate co-management and co-production efforts with Indigenous Nations on their respect for Indigenous
    sovereignty and the rights of Indigenous Nations.

This certificate will include nine credit hours from a series of courses. All courses will be offered in-person at the SUNY ESF campus in Syracuse, New York. Alternative educational experiences can be petitioned to count in place of a course if learning objectives are met. Petitions must be submitted to the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment curriculum committee for review and approval. Admission to this certificate requires graduate student status with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
