Public Desktop Computers

Summary (what you get)

Over 200 public desktop computers are available at multiple campuses for all students, faculty, and staff to use with specialized software installed to support teaching and learning.

When using a public computer, please save your files to your network space (H drive) or OneDrive. Note: Computers will restart every night to install updates. This restart will cause all local files to be deleted.

New software, upgrades to existing software, and operating system updates are done annually.

When You Recieve It

Library Computers

Computers are situated on the main level of the Library and are available whenever the Library is open. 

Remote-Only Computer Labs

There are multiple types of remote computer labs available for students, faculty and staff.

Horizon Lab

A 24/7 computer lab with some of the most used software on campus. Easy access to on campus administrative applications like Argos. Note: This lab is not necessarily available in all countries and is dependent on the Syracuse campus having power/internet.

ESF Horizon Lab

Apporto Lab

A 24/7 computer lab that has some of the most used software on campus and is accessible from almost anywhere in the world. 

Syracuse University Virtual Lab

Syracuse University's virtual lab has some of the same software as ESF and some software we don't have. It is accessible to students using their SU NetI ID. Faculty and staff can request access by contacting the ESF helpdesk.

Computer Labs

Computer labs on the Syracuse main campus are available for student use when classes are not scheduled in the spaces. Baker Labs 319 is an open computer lab, available for use at any time when the helpdesk is open.

Department labs are available to students but availability and access is determined by the individual department.

Service Does Not Include

Employee Computers and Equipment

Summary (what you get)

Employee computers and equipment are quoted by CNS to ensure devices are supportable, meet ESF campus software/hardware requirements, and are at the lowest possible cost. The purchase and replacement of computers and equipment is the responsibility  of departments.

Computers being re-purposed shoud be brought back to CNS for a tune-up to make sure the device is in good working order prior to allocating to a new person.

Service Includes

  • Quotes for computers and related hardware
  • Setup and support by CNS staff
  • Warranty support from manufacturer, facilitated by CNS
  • Accidental damage coverage, facilitated by CNS

For anyone doing heavy computational research requiring a computer setup different from a daily use laptop, it is recommended that 2 computers be purchased: one for daily use and a desktop for research. Apple Computers

Due to a variety of factors, it is recommended that Apple laptops only be purchases for individual daily use. For any research computing needs we recommend purchasing a daily use Apple laptop and a Windows desktop for research.
