How Do I...?

Moon Library Frequently Asked Questions

When you're off campus, you're off the ESF network.  You can still access Moon Library resources, but you'll eventually need to login with your ESFiD.

  • Begin your search through links found on the Moon Library website. Why do this? - Moon Library users are digitally recognized from the ESF campus network (Ethernet or Evergreen IP ranges) which enables you to either have access or login if needed.  When you search from Moon Library, the subscription resources assume you are an ESF patron or will direct you to a proxy login (ESFiD) if you are off campus.

After you are successfully logged in, you will have the same privileges and search capabilities as you would in Moon Library or anywhere else on campus.

Our main search engine (Primo VE) is an all-in-one tool to find print books, eBooks, articles, and media across the library's collections.  Check out our Basic Library Search guide for tips on using PrimoVE.

To renew items on loan, users will need to navigate to the library discovery system (PrimoVE) and login into their account. Once you login, click on your name in the upper righthand corner, click on "my loans", and you will see an option to renew your loans (if available).

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service that allows you to borrow books, articles, and other research materials from other libraries if Moon Library doesn't own them. If we don't have what you need on our shelves or online, we will find a library that does and acquire it for you.

Ready to make a request? Visit our Interlibrary Loan Page to get started.

SUNY ESF utilizes a network based app called PaperCut NG to manage personal printing accounts.  You can access it at printing.esf.edu (make sure you're on Evergreen WiFi or a network connection).  Printing @ESF provides information on printing options.  How to print on shared printers offers instruction on using the printing app.  The printing process works by uploading documents, selecting a printer to print to, and releasing the job once the document is queued.

The Moon Library circulation desk keeps (some) course textbooks on reserve for use in the library.  You can search for course reserves material using the search box on the Moon Library homepage - make sure you choose the "course reserve" facet and type a search such as ERE 131 or FCH 403.  Course reserves are available for 2 hour loans.  This is to ensure that the next student who needs the book can get it within a reasonable time frame.

Beyond books, you can borrow tech and supplies like phone chargers, computer chargers, calculators, therapy lights, headphones, frisbees, a bike pump and more at the front desk. We also host the Moon Seed Library if you are looking to plant a garden!

Yes! ESF students have in-person borrowing privileges at SU Libraries (like Bird Library) using your ESF ID card. However, please note that online database access must be done at a Syracuse University library (using your SU NetID).

To reserve Moon 110 or 19, go to ESF spaces and follow the directions listed.

Please note: If your event is held outside regular Library hours of operations - please be advised that you are responsible for requesting permission from the Director of College Libraries for use of the Moon Library after hours. Permission must be granted prior to making your reservation on the calendar. You are also responsible for notifying the following:

  • Physical Plant (470-6588) in order to arrange for heating or cooling
  • ESF University Police (470-6667) to ensure that the library doors are locked. Setup is required for more than 30 participants in 110 Moon.
  • Seeing that those not attending the scheduled event be kept out of the library.

The Director of College Libraries will confirm permission to use the building after normal hours with ESF University Police.

Current students, staff, and faculty

Once you are processed into the SUNY ESF system you will receive an ESFiD and ESF ID card.  This is your starting place to gain access to Moon Library resources.

How does access work?

You will login with your ESFiD - a combination [email protected] and password you create with Computing and Network Services.  You will then be prompted to verify authentication with the DUO mobile security app.  If you have trouble logging in, please refer to this guide from Computing and Network Services: Computing & Network Services > Account Info (esf.edu) or this guide on the DUO mobile security app: DUO

New ESF student

You may have to wait until the upcoming semester is about to start to gain access to library resources.

ESF Alumni

Only current faculty, staff, and students have access to most of ESF Libraries' resources when they are off-campus.  Guest passes are available for individuals who visit the library.

ESF in the High School

The K-12 Outreach office at ESF can provide username and password credentials that ESF in the high school teachers may use to access library materials from off-campus.

Syracuse University: students, staff, and faculty

When off-campus, ESF library resources are not available remotely and vice-versa, Syracuse University Libraries' are not available to ESF users.  You can visit the library in person or request books through interlibrary loan.

You can come in anytime when the library is open. If you have an in depth research question, librarians are available from 9am - 3pm Monday - Thursday and 9am - 1pm on Fridays as long as the library is open.

If you need help outside of those times, you can directly email a librarian. A list of librarians and their emails is on our directory page.

In addition, we have a research process guide that will help you get started doing research for your major.
