Study Examines Conditions for Growing Young Chestnuts

The American chestnut was once a mainstay in hardwood forests as far north as Maine and as far south as Georgia and Mississippi. A massive chestnut blight in the early part of the 20th century ended the mighty chestnut's domination, wiping out billions of mature trees. Scientists are now working to restore the American chestnut's place in U.S. forests. ESF researchers published a study in the February issue of "HortScience" that provides new recommendations that can help increase the stock of blight-resistant trees.
Scientists Honored for Study on Improving Odds for Bats' Survival

Two ESF researchers are part of an innovative team of scientists that has been honored for research focused on improving bats' odds of surviving white-nose syndrome (WNS) by investigating their migratory patterns, habitat use and ability to fight the disease itself.
AIC’s Artists-in-Residence to Be Featured in ESF Show

The work of artists Casey Landerkin and Mariana Trofimova will be exhibited on the ESF campus as part of Earth Week celebrations. Landerkin and Trofimova spent part of the summer as artists-in-residence at ESF's Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) at the college's Newcomb Campus. Throughout the summer, the artists worked onsite, creating pieces inspired by the local landscape. Their work was on display all summer at the AIC and will be on display in 110 Moon Library as part of Earth Week, April 18-22.

The ESF Baobab Society and the ESF Student Diversity and Inclusion Office hosted the annual Spirit and Essence Banquet Feb. 13, attracting a capacity crowd despite the snowy, negative 2-degree weather. The banquet concluded the 2016 Student Diversity Week, which featured numerous events on campus that promoted diversity awareness.
