WISE Speaker Series Looks at Interface of Science and Policy
Dr. Brooke Hemming, senior physical scientist, US EPA National Center for Environmental Assessment, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, will present Adventures at the Science-Policy Interface, 11 a.m. March 28 in Alumni Lounge, Marshall Hall.
Dr. Hemming will share personal insights into the role scientists play in public policy, developed through her work with the interdisciplinary team charged with establishing the scientific foundation for "criteria" air pollutant limits via synthesis of data with emergent understanding of atmospheric science and the acute and long-term impacts of exposure to human health and ecosystems.
Those interested in meeting with Hemming Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning should contact Heather Engelman at engelman@esf.edu. Discussions can focus on current or past work (yours or hers), potential collaborations, or on insight regarding working within a federal agency. Meeting blocks are open to students and faculty, individually or in groups; graduate students, clubs and research teams are especially encouraged to take advantage of Hemming's visit to campus.
Hemming's presentation is part of the Women in Scientific and Environmental Professions Speaker Series and the Chemistry Department Speaker Series. It is sponsored by the Department of Chemistry, ESF and the ESF Women's Caucus.
