ESF’s Dr. Lemir Teron Named Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellow

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), the most distinguished institution in the nation that focuses on the study of the environment, is excited to announce that Dr. Lemir Teron has been named a 2022-23 Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellow by the Rockefeller Institute of Government.

Over the next year, Teron will partner with Rockefeller Institute researchers to examine timely public policy issues in environmental justice. The fellowship seeks to connect cutting-edge policy expertise to public problems and the policy community that tries to address these problems.

"Dr. Teron's research and insights on environmental justice are shaping public policy," said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. "The recognition and opportunity the fellowship provides will further the impact his work has in uncovering and solving environmental justice issues."

As part of his fellowship, Teron will study issues of transportation and environmental justice, with a special emphasis on the disparate impacts of urban heat islands and strategies to combat urban heat.

Teron is an assistant professor in ESF's Department of Environmental Studies. His research focuses on urban sustainability, energy policy, and environmental justice. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Delaware and completed a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-supported postdoc at the Environmental Cooperative Science Center at Florida A&M University.

Teron currently serves on the energy working group of the New York State Climate Impacts Assessment. He was awarded the 2019 Distinguished Faculty Member for Teaching Excellence Award by the ESF Undergraduate Student Association and he received a 2020 Unsung Hero Award at the 35th Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration for his commitment to racial and environmental justice.

Teron is one of six Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellows named this year.
