Mighty Oak Monday: Ashley Carter
Major: Forest Resources Management
Hometown: Manlius, NY
Growing up in a home surrounded by acres of white ash trees, Ashley Carter saw firsthand the effects of the emerald ash borer on the native species. Feeling disheartened by the decimation, she ultimately chose a path to help diminish damage to the forest—and her leadership earned her a national award.
Ashley was immediately drawn to the hands-on coursework at ESF's Ranger School, where she pursued an associate degree in Environmental and Natural Resources Conservation. Through field labs and outdoor excursions in the Adirondacks, she learned about the social, ecological, and economic factors that shaped our forests.
"I want to ensure that forests are sustainably managed while addressing the needs of many different parties," she said.
Ashley then transferred to ESF Syracuse to pursue a bachelor's in Forest Resources Management. She brought with her a passion for service projects and leadership—serving as president of the ESF Forestry Club and Society of American Foresters (SAF)-ESF Chapter.
It was difficult for students to get involved on campus during the pandemic, but Ashley found ways to attract members and keep them engaged through educational events and service activities. Under her leadership, the club hosted guest speakers such as foresters from Weyerhaeuser, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the USDA Forest Service.
Because of her leadership ability, community impact, and academic achievement, the SAF presented Ashley with the Student Leadership Award at its 2022 national convention in Baltimore.
"This award is extremely meaningful to me, as it is a recognition not just for my role as a student leader but of the positive impact that our student chapter has had on students and the local community," she said.
Ashley is on track to graduate in May 2023 and will pursue a master's degree in Forest Resources at the University of Maine (Orono) in Fall 2023.
