Mighty Oak Monday: Maryam Saffari Aman

Major: Environmental Resources Engineering
Hometown: Tehran, Iran

Maryam Saffari Aman wants to work on issues related to environmental pollution, which is why she came to ESF from Iran to pursue her Ph.D. in Environmental Resources Engineering. Many people think of pollution in the context of air and water. Her master's thesis was on this very topic.

For her doctoral thesis, Maryam decided to dive deeper and explore less researched systems affected by environmental contamination, focusing on the prevalence and persistence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in commercially available compost. The topic is timely, as PFAS chemicals continue to seep into every aspect of the environment. Her research is so unique that she recently was awarded the Compost Research & Education Foundation's scholarship for compost research as she begins breaking ground on her outstanding work.

Maryam said she's enjoying her time at ESF and in the United States. She has developed an appreciation for both the intimate environment of ESF and the diversity of the Syracuse area.

"It is nice to have a variety of perspectives and attitudes when we approach out work," she said. Maryam is also very thankful for the support of her advisor Associate Professor Dr. Douglas Daley.

We can't wait to see the results of your PFAS compost study, Maryam!
