Meet the Faculty - Cynthia Downs
For Dr. Cynthia Downs, coming back to ESF was like coming home. She first discovered the college while flipping through old college guidebooks, searching for a place where she could study biology without heading down the pre-med path. One visit and one inspiring conversation later, she was sold. As an undergrad, she found a community of supportive professors and curious classmates who encouraged her to see science not just as a subject, but as a way of thinking about the world. Years — and a Ph.D. — later, when her own animal physiology professor retired, she jumped at the chance to return to ESF as faculty in the Department of Environmental Biology.
Today, Dr. Downs brings that same curiosity and passion to her students. She teaches Animal Physiology, Animal Behavior, and Ecoimmunology, leading classes that are hands-on, discussion-driven, and full of discovery. From studying how wild animals’ immune systems work to mentoring students on real research projects, her goal is to help future scientists learn how to ask questions and find answers that make a difference. For her, ESF students still have that special spark — curious, driven, and ready to make the world a better place.
