Academics and Research
SUNY ESF is globally recognized for its high-quality environmentally focused academic programs.
Sustainability is woven throughout our campus curriculum and is central to our mission as an institution. Whether students are in the classroom, out in the field, in the lab, or in the studio, protecting the environment and contributing to a more sustainable society is the key focus of our coursework.

Class Collaboration
Office of Sustainability staff routinely guest lecture in ESF classes and are available
to present topics related to sustainability on campus or to develop a more tailored
presentation directly tied to specific coursework. We also welcome the chance to get
creative! For example, we partnered with ENS 232 Professional Development in Environmental
Science to conduct a mock job interview with a student volunteer, in front of the
rest of the class. Everyone was invited to share feedback directly after the mock
interview and a robust discussion took place.
Sustainability staff also co-develop class projects and capstones with faculty members.
Students in EST 427 Environmental and Energy Auditing recently assisting in linking
the UN Sustainable Development Goals to each action included in ESF’s Sustainability Action Plan. Students in EST 604 Survey Research Methods helped to develop a survey that was
distributed to campus as part of ESF’s AASHE STARS reporting efforts.

Sustainable Courses Inventory
The Office of Sustainability maintains a list of all academic courses offered at the college that are “Sustainability-Focused” and “Sustainability-Inclusive”. This list is updated every few years and is meant to serve as a resource to students as they decide which courses to take during their time at ESF.
