Analytical and Technical Services
Rate Schedule Inorganics Analysis by ICP

Analytical costs for solution ICP-MS and ICP-OES are charged on a per-hour basis, inclusive of all unknowns, standards, blanks, checks, and replicates required to provide high-quality publishable data. This charge basis helps recover costs for analyzing small numbers of samples, methods involving large numbers of analytes, consumables (e.g., gases, tubing, cones, lenses, reference standards), data reduction time, and instrument service and maintenance. Charges may also apply for sample preparation, data processing, user training and method development. Savings may be available for analyses run by qualified users from ESF and our academic partner institutions.

New users of the ICP instruments are required to engage in hands-on orientation to facility operations (e.g., laboratory access, scheduling, general use of equipment, housekeeping, etc.) and safety protocols and training on specific equipment or methods. Orientation is important to creating a safe and efficient work environment for all users.

If desired, our staff are available to provide consultation or training at no cost for an initial one-hour period on each project. After the first hour, the following per-hour charges will apply and be charged in 30-minute increments. Consultation is available to our academic customers to aid with proposal or method development. Training to attain qualified user status for instrument use is available. A&TS staff will provide training and are solely authorized to determine whether an individual has attained sufficient proficiency to operate the analytical instruments independently of A&TS staff.

The hourly charges for the analyst may be waived if the PI researcher agrees to collaborate with A&TS or if the analyses are performed by a qualified user. Collaborative projects will be charged at 75% of the normal instrument rate and are expected to include co-authorship on derivative publications.

Rates

Research projects will be charged for both instrument and analyst using an hourly rate. Analyses run by a qualified user will be charged for instrument time only. Instrument-hour is based on total usage which includes setup, calibration, QA/QC, instrument operation and data processing.

There is a minimum 1/2-hour charge for instrument use; hourly rates are billed in 30-minute increments.

Rates are effective 11/1/2023 and are subject to change annually based on fiscal year. Please confirm rates with A&TS staff prior to submitting proposal budgets. A&TS will honor previously published rates for existing projects for the remainder of the project duration, or for six months from the date of publication of new rates, whichever occurs first.
