SUNY ESF
Student Support in the Conduct Process
Students involved in ESF’s student conduct process may need additional support and are encouraged to seek support from their parents/guardians, family members, and other trusted advisors. There are staff members in the Division of Student Affairs whose specific role is to assist in securing this support.
The staff in the Division of Student Affairs will generally speak only to the students involved unless they have received written permission allowing them to speak with others. A release form can be obtained from the Division of Student Affairs in 110 Bray Hall. The full policy regarding the Release of Information can be found in this Handbook.
Accommodations
Students requiring accommodations to effectively participate in ESF’s student conduct process, including the provision of interpretive services or translators, are strongly encouraged to contact the Division of Student Affairs, 315-470-6660, 110 Bray Hall, students@esf.edu, to discuss their needs at least one (1) business day prior to a student conduct conference or hearing. The Division of Student Affairs can assist the student with getting connected to the Syracuse University Center for Disability Resources (CDR) for disability-related accommodations.
Advisors
All ESF students involved in the student conduct process, including complainants, respondents, and witnesses, may be advised by one (1) advisor of their choice. This includes a member of the College community such as faculty, staff, or another student as well as an individual from outside the ESF community (including a family member, an attorney, an advocate, etc.) Participation of the advisor in any proceeding is governed by federal law and ESF’s Student Handbook.
The role of the advisor in ESF’s student conduct process is to assist and advise students throughout the student conduct process and in related hearings and/or meetings. An advisor may not speak for or represent their respective party (except to conduct cross examination in a Title IX Grievance process) and is expected to provide advice and support to their respective parties in a quiet, non-disruptive manner. Any advisor who fails to conform to these standards may be removed from the proceedings at the discretion of the student conduct officer and barred from acting as an advisor in future ESF student conduct process proceedings.
Title IX Advisors:
As described in the ESF Title IX Grievance Policy, cases involving an alleged Title IX violation require the advisor for the respective party to conduct cross examination of any other party presenting testimony at a live hearing. If a party does not have an advisor, ESF will provide one for them. The ESF Title IX Grievance Policy includes rules of decorum that must be followed by advisors participating in a Title IX Grievance hearing.
Attorneys
Students facing legal proceedings in addition to student conduct action are urged to consult an attorney about their situation. All full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to use Syracuse University Student Legal Services, Marshall Square Mall, 720 University Avenue, 315-443-4532. Students may also consult the private attorney of their choice (at the student’s expense).
