SUNY ESF Welcomes Incoming Undergraduate Class for Fall 2024
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Aug. 20, 2024 – The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) campus welcomes its incoming undergraduate class for Fall 2024, with first-year enrollment up about 7.5% and transfer student enrollment up nearly 10% over the previous year.
Starting Monday, Aug. 19, 429 first-year and 222 transfer students join the ESF campus.
“It’s with great pride and enthusiasm that we welcome our newest Mighty Oaks to the ESF community. Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and engagement,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. “Our continued increase in enrollment is a testament to the strength of our programs and demand for environmentally focused careers. Students choose ESF because they want to be surrounded by sustainability-minded people at a specialized STEM college. We look forward to their journey and wish them much success.”
This year represents a strong year for ESF admissions. The College received more than 3,700 first-year applications for Fall 2024 admission. Most of this year’s incoming students represent 54 counties from across New York state, with about 28% from 29 other states and various countries.
New students are participating in a week of orientation activities to help them acclimate to college life, including New Student Convocation; sessions on wellness, academics, diversity, and sustainability; activities and games; and a food truck rally. The week culminates with the College's traditional Saturday of Service on Aug. 24, when students engage in community service projects throughout the area. This year, students will do general park maintenance and work on removing invasive species at six local parks. Community service is one of the hallmarks of the ESF student experience and helps new students make an early connection with Syracuse.
ESF’s Ranger School in Wanakena, N.Y., welcomed 58 new students — including 36 transfers — who are enrolled in one of three associate in applied science programs. The Graduate School at ESF welcomed approximately 130 new students who are pursuing their master’s and doctoral degrees.
Classes begin at ESF’s Syracuse campus on Monday, Aug. 26.
