Ranger School Alumni Ice Students in Annual Hockey Game
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Ranger School class of 2026 faced alumni in the annual hockey game at SU’s Tennity Ice Pavilion earlier this spring.
The event opened with a ceremonial faceoff between alumni representative Matt Castrello and Ranger School captains Elyza Minicozzi and Tristan Cook. After Dr. Michael Bridgen dropped the puck, the teams played five 15-minute mini-games, with the score resetting after each. Wins earned two points, ties one point, and losses zero.
The class of ’26 put up a strong effort but could not overcome the alumni. As the alumni began to slow in the third game, the class capitalized with goals from Jay Gagnon and Ben Thompson. Despite the momentum, the alumni rallied to secure the win and claimed victory across the mini-games.
The class fielded an overfull bench, rotating two goalies and drawing an energetic crowd. The alumni roster included 24 players and numerous fans, creating a lively atmosphere. Alumni goals came from Conor Henrie ’16, Matt Tuohy ’25, Sean Van Riper ’25, Nick Stein ’25, Matt Castrello ’20, Matt Manning ’05, Dave Bardoun ’91, Lance Bardoun ’25, Jake Avery ’22, Greg Vaverchak ’02, Karl “Sure Shot” Hunter ’15, Vinny Iacovitti ’23, Jack Beattie ’23, and Jeremy Thompson ’97.
Special thanks to Drs. Johnston and Bridgen for running the scoreboard, Tim O’Mara and Dr. Bevilacqua for refereeing, O’Mara and Jeremy Thompson for their season-long support, and this year’s boosters Amy Thompson, Eric Marsland, Matt Castrello, and Denkenberger Surveying. Their contributions helped make the season a success.
