Research involving ESF and its facility on Governors Island began with a series of studies revolving around impacts of extension of the shipping season on the St. Lawrence Seaway in the mid-1970s.

In the early 1980s, Governors Island became a primary site for the investigation of declines of Great Lakes Muskellunge through a US/Canadian partnership Muskellunge Working Group that set research and management priorities.

These early efforts provided the impetus for creation of TIBS leading to considerable diversification in our research and monitoring agenda.
