Close an Award
Timely closeout of sponsored awards is essential to the Office of Research compliance with sponsor requirements and policies.
At this phase, PIs, Office of Research staff, and Research Foundation Central Office staff work concurrently to submit progress reporting, financial reporting, special requests, and more to finalize the requirements of the agreement.

If Your Award is Terming
An award that is terming goes through several checks prior to being submitted for
final billing and closeout. You will partner with your SPA and the Post-Award SPA
during the closeout process. Throughout the process, the SPA and Post-Award SPA will
work with the Business Office, Payroll Office, and Human Resources before submitting
the final closeout paperwork to the Research Foundation Central Office in Albany.
There are two award dates to be familiar with during this process:
End Date — when all expenditures and work must stop.
Close Date — when the final invoice is due to the sponsor
About 90 days (3 months) before an award ends, the PI should consider if the award’s work will be completed by the end date. Please contact your SPA to discuss final spending plans and or extension requests.
No Cost Extension
A no-cost extension (NCE) is a mechanism that allows the principal investigator (PI) of a research project to extend the project period without providing additional funds to support the project. Essentially, it grants extra time to complete the project’s objectives without requiring additional financial resources from the funding agency.
